'91 Mazda MX-5. The first generation of the Mazda MX-5, the car was designed by Tom Matano, Bob Hall and a bunch of other people, the MX-5 was designed in Irvine, California and was engineered to be "a great sports car", in the words of Bob Hall. The car has been compared to cars such as the Austin-Healey and Morgan, the MX-5 attempted to capture the spirit of those European sports cars. The design competed against designs from the Tokyo and Hiroshima design studios; the California design won out and was used on the production car. Many changes were made over time until its initial release in 1989; factory restoration programs have been started by Mazda to produce reproduction parts for their cars.
