This is a 1966 Vespa 90 Super Sprint. Designed by Corradino D'Ascanio, the Vespa 90 SS was a series of scooters manufactured by Piaggio under their Vespa brand from 1965 to 1972. Derived from the 50 introduced in 1955, the 90 SS was a larger version with a bigger tank and some modifications for a more "laid back" riding style.
This Vespa was powered by a 89cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine, making 6 horsepower; it had a top speed of 58 mph (93 km/h). Identifiable by its spare tire mounted on the cowling, two colors were produced for the Italian market, being Peacock Blue and Monza Red. Transmission was a 4-speed constant mesh. Other features were a dummy fuel tank, aerodynamic fairing and a pad on top of the dummy tank for riders to crouch lower at high speeds.
Often described as "the icon of the sports scooter for a while generation", the 90 SS was the highest-priced of the Vespas of the lineup of the time. Their polarizing looks and high price led the 90 SS to not be a sales success due to them appealing mainly to a niche market of scooter racers and those who "wanted something different". Today, the 90 SS is one of the most highly sought after Vespas, as well as one of the rarest; this line of Vespas would eventually evolve to become today's Primavera. 5,309 were produced.
Now this casting was designed by Craig Callum and introduced in 2024 in the Factory Fresh series of the mainline. This is currently its only release although I expect there to be more colors available in the future.
