This is a 1977 Toyota Celica 2000GT Liftback. Designed by Masao Fujita and Tatsuo Hasegawa, the Celica was a sports car marketed by Toyota in various body styles and typically powered by an inline-4 engine.
The Celica was initially introduced at the 1970 Tokyo Motor Show in October 1970 alongside the Toyota Carina, which it was based on; marketing of the Celica commenced on 3 December 1970. Emphasizing styling and driving enjoyment, the Celica's styling was influenced by American cars, with the car aimed at the North American market. The Celica was exclusive to Toyota's Corolla Store dealerships and was priced at about ¥875,000; in the US when the car was launched, the Celica was priced at $2,398.
At launch the only body style available was a notchback coupe with coke bottle styling. At the 1971 Tokyo Motor Show, a new concept car, the SV-1, was unveiled; with minor modifications this would enter production in April 1973 as the Celica Liftback. Engine options available for the Liftback included the 2.0L 18R and 1.6L 2T inline-4; liftbacks could be identified by their flatter noses. In the US, only the 2.2L 20R was available in its later years. The car's styling, influenced by the Ford Mustang, would give rise to it being nicknamed the Japanese Mustang or Mustang Celica.
The Celica would be facelifted in 1972, 1974 and 1976, with the latter year bringing the most changes to the model. The 1976 facelift gave the car a larger wheelbase as well as a number of aesthetic changes, such as a new front end, removal of the hood vents and a new interior upholstery and dashboard. The Celica was discontinued in July 1977, being replaced by a new generation in August. 163,714 were produced.
