This is a '78 Mazda Savanna, known in export markets as the RX-3. In essence, the RX-3 was a rotary-engined version of the Mazda Grand Familia; apart from the engine both cars are largely identical. Smaller and sportier than its brother the Capella Rotary (or RX-2), the RX-3 gave Japanese buyers a financial advantage when it came time to pay road taxis as the RX-3 was more powerful than the Grand Familia but without the penalty for the tax bracket for larger engines. A clock, a rear defogger, collapsible steering wheel and even side trim were options. Sold from 1972 to 1978 in the United States the RX-3 was highly successful. 285,887 were produced.
Now this casting was designed by Mark Jones and introduced in 2016 in the Japanese Historics series in the Car Culture line; this was the first new casting introduced in the then-new Car Culture lineup. In 2020 this casting was retooled for the mainline with a plastic base. This casting has seen eight known releases; this includes a future 2022 release.
